A comparison between the measured values of leakage radiofrequency (rf) power density from the diathermy units which have been in use for long time and those commissioned recently, shows that usage and aging does not significantly increase the leakages from diathermy units. Observed leakage densities are however higher than those reported during such studies by international bodies. With increasing use of radiofrequency and microwave radiation in research, industry and medicine, it has become imperative that a programme of safety studies and surveys around facilities using (rf) radiation be kept alive. it is then easier to point out cases of faulty equipment and work practices which result in excessive exposures.
